The perfect companion to your land-based intervention with Art of Swimming

For brand new swimmers learning a new stroke, or experienced swimmers keen to refine their technique, Shaw Method has something to offer everyone.

Swimming has many health benefits – improving cardiovascular health, strength, mobility, motor control and providing a sense of well-being with high adherence. Those who swim are eight times1 more likely to meet physical activity guidelines! However, it is also true that these benefits are highly dependent on skill, technique and stroke type2.

Did you know?

Only 1 in 3 adults in the UK can swim more than 25m– a statistic which doesn’t provide any information about swimmer confidence, technique or enjoyment3. In addition, traditional swim strokes have been developed for competitive swimmers and elite athletes with speed as the goal, which has resulted in compromises to posture, alignment and healthy joint movements. Consequently, both competitive and recreational swimming may aggravate back/neck injuries4, cause shoulder pain5 or feel inaccessible to certain populations.

Swimming is a complex skill, requiring  coordination of balance, breath control and movement, similar to Pilates, yoga or martial arts. Steven Shaw, an ex-competitive swimmer, has used the principles of the Alexander Technique to redesign each stroke creating a mindful and nurturing swimming technique. Shaw Method swimming focuses on reducing inappropriate strain to joints and soft tissue, particularly the back, neck and knees while improving efficiency and creating a joyful experience.

Shaw Method swimming teachers are specialists in adult swimming tuition. Teaching in the water, they provide hands-on guidance to improve skill acquisition. Each part of the stroke is broken down into manageable bite-sized chunks practised in and out of the water and are gradually layered. The result is a stroke which the swimmer is in complete control of and can modify confidently according to the need of the day. As part of our teaching team, our Shaw Method trained in-house Physiotherapist, Hollie Hazon-Dodd, can provide extra support where required.

The Shaw Method

Shaw Method swimming is sheer elegance, flying in the water. It can be calming or exhilarating, challenging or restorative depending on what you need most.

"Ah that's better..."

This is Joanna.

Most evenings after work, she feels a bit tightly wound
– her neck and shoulders ache, her mind doing overtime.
Then she heads to the pool….

Since taking Shaw Method lessons with Art of Swimming,
Joanna has transformed her relationship with swimming.
As soon as she slips into the pool, she forgets the stresses
of the day – her heartbeat slows, her neck and back
relax as she glides through the water.

She leaves the pool feeling refreshed, relaxed
and renewed.

We are so confident that you will love Shaw Method for yourself and your clients that we are offering a limited number of discount lessons for you and your team from just £10 to celebrate opening new venues in Putney and Golders Green. (Promotional code HFP2024)

What health professionals say about Shaw Method

“Shaw Method attends to a pupil’s relationship with the water, enables them to put their face in the water, encourages sympathetic body alignment, and promotes health and well-being like no other method I know”

— Gilian Jordan, former Vice President of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy

“As a practitioner, I have referred many patients to Art of Swimming. The feedback that I have had from such patients has been nothing short of exceptional praise of Shaw Method, the teachers and the results”

— Giulia Quintarelli DO, Registered Osteopath

“The health benefits to people swimming correctly are enormous. Unfortunately, with conventional teaching methods most people develop technique that puts strain on the neck, back and other joints that can produce injuries. The Shaw Method creates a superior technique that produces improvements in posture, cardiovascular fitness and confidence for all to see”

— Dr Richard De Souza, General Practitioner

“I fully support and endorse Art of Swimming. They offer an answer to the many ills of our always-on-the-go society by allowing people of all ages to recover their rhythm in the water, acquiring a form of exercises that doesn’t strain the body, but tones muscles, encourages good posture, and rehabilitates joints out of weight bearing”

— Isabelle de Reyher DO, Registered Osteopath

“Shaw Method helps elite athletes to be aware of where they are in the water and recreational swimmers to avoid discomfort and sore muscles and be more absorbed in what they are doing”

— Paul Massey, British Olympic Physiotherapist
