This time of year, the darkness comes early.

By late afternoon, the sky over North-West London is already fading. Many of us turn towards the festivals that brighten this season: the candles of Chanukah, the lights and trees of Christmas, the small rituals of warmth and gathering that carry us through the long nights.

Different traditions, similar message: light in the darkness, hope in the heart, renewal in the middle of winter.

At the Art of Swimming Academy in Golders Green, we see another kind of light every week   the golden reflections on warm water, and the quiet glow that appears in people when they start to feel truly at home in the pool.

This winter, I’d like to offer a simple invitation:

As you light candles and hang decorations, can you also give yourself the green light to feel well in 2026?

We all know what a green light means: go ahead, you’re allowed. Yet when it comes to caring for our own bodies and nervous systems, many of us keep showing a red or amber light:

“I’ll start when things calm down.”
“Maybe next year I’ll get back into exercise.”
“One day I’ll deal with my fear of the water…”

For us, Golders Green isn’t just a venue. It’s a symbol of that “green light moment”   the point where you stop postponing and choose ease, confidence, and better movement for yourself.

Walk into our evening sessions at the Golders Green Academy and you’ll notice:

the soft, golden light on the surface of the pool,
warm water,
people of all ages and backgrounds learning at their own pace.

It’s not a bootcamp or a punishment for what you did or didn’t do last year. It’s a sanctuary for tired bodies and busy minds.

Using the Shaw Method, we teach swimming in a way that’s kind to joints, friendly to the spine, and soothing for the nervous system. We focus on:

softening rather than forcing,
breathing that calms rather than stresses,
alignment that supports you in and out of the water.

Many arrive with a story: fear of water, old injuries, exhausting strokes, or simply a longing for one quiet hour a week that’s just for them. Week by week, shoulders drop, breathing settles, and what once felt frightening or effortful becomes lighter and more enjoyable.

This is what I mean by delivering light through the water: not a dramatic transformation overnight, but steady, tangible moments of ease that start in the pool and ripple into everyday life.

As we move from the festivals of light towards the New Year, you might ask yourself:

What would it mean to feel more at home in my body in 2026?

What if my goal wasn’t to “push harder”, but to move with more ease and less fear?

If that resonates, we’d love to welcome you   or welcome you back   to the Art of Swimming Academy in Golders Green.

Whether you want to:
learn to swim from scratch,
refine your stroke so it feels smoother and kinder,
or simply give your nervous system a regular hour of peace, this could be your green light moment.

As the candles, trees, and streetlights brighten the winter evenings, remember there is also a golden light waiting for you in the water.

Give yourself permission.

Give your body a chance.

And let 2026 be the year you step into warm water and discover how good it can feel to be carried, supported, and gently renewed.

Warmly Steven
