The Shaw Method Workshops in PASADENA · NOVEMBER 2026
A SPACE TO BREATHE
Five days of immersive exploration into swimming, breathing, movement and awareness.
This November, Steven Shaw invites you into a deeper exploration of swimming through a series of immersive Shaw Method workshops.
Explore how a different relationship with the water can transform the way we swim, move and experience ourselves.
Through awareness, attunement, breathing, balance and ease, we discover how to work with the water rather than simply work harder against it.
Upcoming Workshop dates:
7:00 AM–12:00 PM
Boys & Girls Club · Pasadena, California
Steven Shaw
Founder of The Shaw Method · Author · Swimming Teacher
Known as the “Horse Whisperer of Swimming,” Steven Shaw is the founder of The Shaw Method and an author whose books explore swimming from a fresh perspective.
Moving beyond traditional coaching, Steven explores the wider possibilities of swimming for wellness, self-awareness and personal development.
His approach is influenced by the principles of the Alexander Technique, which he has integrated into his work in the water.
The Shaw Method explores how we move, breathe, balance and relate to the water, helping swimmers discover greater ease, awareness and enjoyment.
His passion for swimming is matched only by his passion for sharing its joy with others.
“What you discover in the water does not stay in the water.”
The awareness, ease and connection we develop in the water can influence how we move, feel and experience life beyond the pool.
THE FIVE-DAY JOURNEY
Five-hour immersive workshops
Each day combines approximately:
- 3 HOURS – Pool work
- 1 HOUR – Movement-based groundwork
- 1 HOUR – Reflection, discussion & integration
Each workshop can be attended as a standalone experience, while the five days have also been designed as a connected journey, with each day building on what comes before.
Course Structure
We Explore:
LANGUAGE
Finding the right words to communicate the work clearly.
DIRECTION
Giving guidance that empowers rather than takes away agency.
FACILITATION
Supporting exploration rather than criticising.
OBSERVATION
Helping someone find a solution rather than simply pointing out what is wrong.
TOUCH
Using touch while allowing the person space to discover for themselves.
RELATIONSHIP
Learning to work with another person rather than simply telling them what to do.
For those interested in teaching, these days provide an introduction to the skills and principles involved in sharing the Shaw Method.
For those not planning to teach, learning to observe, listen, communicate and respond can itself deepen their understanding and embodiment of the work.
TEACHING BECOMES ANOTHER WAY OF LEARNING.
By developing the ability to work with another person, we discover more about the work within ourselves.
A PARTICIPANT’S EXPERIENCE
“Thank you so much for this morning. What a wonderful experience. I loved how I felt in the water and the difference you made in such a short space of time. Many, many thanks for a truly special experience.”
