Celebrating Different Minds in the Water
This week marks Neurodiversity Awareness Week, a time to recognise, understand and celebrate the rich diversity of human minds.
At the Art of Swimming, embracing neurodiversity has long been part of our philosophy. The Shaw Method offers a calm, multi-sensory way of learning that supports many neurodivergent individuals who often struggle with traditional swimming instruction.
Water has a remarkable capacity to regulate the nervous system. Through gentle breathing, buoyancy, rhythm and sensory feedback, many swimmers discover a profound sense of calm, focus and confidence in the water.
Throughout this week we will be sharing a daily series of short articles exploring:
• How water supports self-regulation
• Why the Shaw Method’s multi-sensory approach works so well
• The importance of inclusive learning environments
• Stories and insights from our growing community
We will also be announcing a unique fundraising event.
On 2 April – World Autism Day – we will attempt something never done before:
The World’s First Glidathon.
Our goal is simple and powerful.
144 people gliding for 10 minutes each, creating a continuous 24 hours of gliding — around the clock.
The event will raise £24,000 to support the work of our charity Neurodiversity 4 Shaw, helping fund pilot studies exploring how mindful swimming can support self-regulation, confidence and wellbeing for neurodivergent individuals.
Because sometimes the simplest experience can be the most profound.
The moment you realise the water will hold you.
This week we celebrate different ways of thinking, learning and experiencing the world.
And we invite you to glide with us.
Discover more throughout the week and join the Glidathon.
Together we can change lives — one glide at a time.
