As we approach the second anniversary of my father’s death, Maurice Shaw, on 17 April, I reflect on a man whose influence shaped not only my life but also the development of the Shaw Method. His unwavering support and encouragement were pivotal in my journey—particularly when he inspired me to pursue my studies as an Alexander Technique teacher. He recognised the potential in combining this with swimming, a passion that has become my life’s work.

Growing up, my father was a constant source of wisdom and guidance. He believed in the importance of movement and awareness—principles that are foundational to both the Alexander Technique and swimming. His encouragement pushed me to explore the depths of these disciplines, leading to the creation of a unique method that integrates body awareness with the fluidity of swimming.

When my first daughter, Talia, was born, she struggled to pronounce “Grandpa Maurice” and affectionately dubbed him “Momo.” This name stuck and became a term of endearment in our family. As he aged and slowed down, my nephew Daniel playfully began calling him “SlowMo”—a nickname that resonated with all of us and perfectly captured his kind spirit and approach to life.

In honour of my father’s legacy, I have decided to launch a new brand and concept called Slow Mo. This brand will serve as an alternative to the premium swimming brand Speedo, embracing a philosophy that celebrates the beauty of taking things slow. Slow Mo will not only offer swimwear, but also promote a lifestyle that values mindfulness, relaxation, and the joy of movement rather than competition.

Through Slow Mo, I aim to carry forward my father’s teachings and the values he instilled in me. This brand will be a tribute to his memory, embodying the essence of living life at a pace that allows for reflection, enjoyment, and connection with oneself and others.

As I embark on this new venture, I am filled with gratitude for the inspiration my dad provided. Maurice Shaw was more than just a father; he was a mentor, a friend, and a guiding light. I hope to honour him through Slow Mo—creating a space that encourages others to embrace their own journeys with the same love and patience he showed me.

In the spirit of my father, I invite you to join me in celebrating the art of moving slowly—because life, much like swimming, is best enjoyed when we take the time to savour every stroke.
