OLIVIER RENARD, 35 .a French. IT specialist living in Crystal Palace, London, transformed his swimming with a few simple adjustments
I learned to swim as a child but stopped during my teenage years and 20’s. Last year I started swimming again to improve my fitness. I was a competent swimmer but I never felt totally comfortable in the water so I began to look online to see if there were any books on swimming technique.
I found one called Master the Art of Swimming and discovered that its author Steven Shaw also offer lessons.I signed up for a one-day workshop for improving front crawl and backstroke and the results have been amazing. I've since been to another workshop and some one-to-one lessons.
When I’m doing the front crawl I have learned to engage my core stability muscles and rotate the body on each stroke. This stopped me lifting my head out, arching my back and enabled me to breathe much more easily. I’ve also learned to glide between each stroke rather than wind-milling my arms.
These changes mean that I’m now a much more efficient swimmer. Swimming feels natural gentle and easy because I am working with the water not against it.
